Australian Butterfly Sanctuary

Travelling to Cairns with the kids? Then make sure you add “visit the Australian Butterfly Sanctuary” to your to-do list and fill your holiday with colourful enchantment.

The sanctuary opened its doors in 1987. Since then it was visited by over a million people and why wouldn’t they? The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is the largest butterfly flight aviary and exhibit in Australia. In fact, the aviary is home to more than 2000 tropical butterflies that are well taken care of. There you will find the iconic Kuranda Butterfly, the fluoro green and yellow Cairns Birdwing Butterfly, Orchard Butterfly, orange Lacewing, and the electric blue Ulysses Butterfly.

Want to see them up close? Then take part of the sanctuary’s guided tours to witness and learn the butterfly cycle and behavior. There are two guided tours to choose from.

The flight aviary guided tour lasts for 30 minutes and is available throughout the day. Visitors can visit the engine room and also the caterpillars breeding nursery. See and understand the stages and developments of these amazing creature before they are released to the main aviary. The tour ends at the butterfly flight aviary where you can interact with the butterflies.

Make sure to wear bright-coloured shirts such as red, white, and hot pink. This will attract the colourful butterflies letting you admire their beauty up close.

Moreover, the other one is called the laboratory guided tour which also lasts about 30 minutes. Though this one is optional, this is only available upon request. Here you will see first-hand the breeding laboratory through the special viewing windows.

Witness the caterpillars in different stages of development and learn various interesting facts. Do you know that caterpillars change their skins five times? Better ask the experts when you take part of this educational tour.

The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary is open daily from 9.45am to 4.00pm but is closed on Christmas Day. It is located at 8 Rob Veivers Drive in the heart of Kuranda Village. It is just half an hour from Cairns in Tropical North Queensland, Australia.
