Yes, North Cairns is a good place to stay, and for most visitors it is a smarter base than the waterfront. North Cairns accommodation sits on the airport side of town, a flat 20 minute walk from the CBD, with free parking, full-size apartments and none of the premium you pay for an Esplanade address.
If your Cairns trip is built around the reef, the rainforest or the hinterland rather than bar-hopping along the boardwalk, this stretch of Sheridan St puts you closer to where you actually need to be.
What is the Sheridan St corridor and why do guests choose it?
Sheridan St is the main road running north from the Cairns CBD toward the airport and the northern beaches. Once you pass the hospital precinct, the street settles into a wide, flat corridor lined with low-rise accommodation, cafes and suburban services.
It is not glamorous. It is practical, affordable and surprisingly well positioned.
Tropic Towers sits at 294 to 298 Sheridan St, about 2 km north of the CBD heart. The apartments come with full kitchens, laundry facilities and a garden pool and BBQ area that most waterfront hotels charge a resort fee to access.
There is free off-street parking on site, which matters more than it sounds when CBD parking runs $15 to $20 a day during peak season.
The trade-off is honest: you are not on the Esplanade. The Lagoon and the marina are roughly 2 km south, a 25 to 30 minute walk along the foreshore. Front-facing rooms can catch traffic noise during peak hours.
But if you are driving up to the Daintree, catching a dawn boat to the reef or heading to Kuranda, being on the northern side of town shaves time and fuel off every trip.
Is Sheridan St walkable to the city?
Completely. The footpath runs the full length of Sheridan St into the CBD, flat the entire way.
From Tropic Towers to the corner of Shields St, where the restaurants and shops cluster, is about 2 km. That is 20 to 25 minutes at a comfortable pace, or one bus ride on the routes that run frequently along Sheridan.
What makes the walk worthwhile rather than just tolerable is the strip between the property and town. Guyala Cafe at the corner of Sheridan and Smith streets does serious breakfast with an emphasis on local and indigenous ingredients, open seven days.
A few hundred metres further up the road, Tobruk Memorial Pool is a proper 50 m Olympic pool with a toddler splash area, a warm-water therapy pool and a cafe on site. It is the kind of local facility tourists rarely find unless they are staying in the neighbourhood.
Heading the other direction, toward the Esplanade rather than into the CBD, Muddy's Playground and the northern stretch of the foreshore parklands are about 15 minutes on foot.
That is the closest section of the Cairns foreshore to North Cairns, and for families with young children it is a better destination than the Lagoon anyway: shaded play equipment, open lawns and fewer crowds.
Cairns city vs North Cairns: what are you actually trading?
The waterfront gives you the Lagoon at your doorstep, the night markets across the road and a five minute walk to the marina for reef boats. You pay for that with higher nightly rates, paid parking and a longer drive to the airport and anything north of town.
North Cairns gives you the reverse. You are 5 km from the airport, roughly a 10 minute drive and a $20 to $25 taxi fare.
The Cairns Botanic Gardens and Tanks Arts Centre in Edge Hill are closer from here than from the CBD, about 2.5 km away.
The turn onto the Captain Cook Highway, which takes you to Skyrail at Smithfield, the Northern Beaches and eventually Port Douglas, is a few minutes north without touching the CBD at all.
For guests visiting Cairns Hospital, the equation is even simpler. The hospital sits on the Esplanade about 1 km from the Tropic Towers location, a comfortable walk or a three minute drive.
We see plenty of guests staying here while a family member is in care, and the full kitchen and laundry in every apartment make a week-long stay liveable rather than just survivable.
The honest summary: if your evenings revolve around the waterfront dining strip, you will feel the distance. If your days revolve around the reef, the rainforest, the hinterland or the hospital, North Cairns accommodation gives you a better starting point for less money.
What is there to do within walking distance of North Cairns accommodation?
More than the postcards suggest. The Sheridan St corridor is not a tourist precinct, which is precisely why it works for longer stays and families.
Within a few hundred metres of Tropic Towers you have Tobruk Memorial Pool for morning laps or an afternoon cool-down, the Cairns Tennis Centre and hockey fields about 800 m away, and Guyala Cafe for a proper sit-down breakfast that is not a hotel buffet.
The northern Esplanade parklands, including Muddy's Playground, are a short walk east toward the water.
Push a little further, about 2.5 km toward Edge Hill, and you reach the Cairns Botanic Gardens. The Flecker Garden section covers tropical plants from across the region, and the Tanks Arts Centre next door runs live music, exhibitions and film screenings inside repurposed World War II fuel-storage tanks.
It is genuinely one of the best small arts venues in regional Australia, and most tourists miss it entirely because it is not on the waterfront.
The northern corridor also means you are already pointed in the right direction for day trips. Skyrail Rainforest Cableway at Smithfield is about 15 minutes north.
Palm Cove and the Northern Beaches are 20 to 30 minutes. Port Douglas is an hour up the coast without needing to backtrack through the CBD.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is North Cairns safe for families?
North Cairns is a quiet residential and medical precinct with well-lit streets, regular foot traffic from hospital staff and a slower pace than the waterfront strip. Families walk comfortably between Sheridan St and the northern Esplanade parklands day and night.
Where can I park for free in Cairns?
Most Sheridan St accommodation north of the CBD offers free off-street parking for guests. Tropic Towers has dedicated spaces on site, so you can leave the car and walk, drive or bus into town without paying for CBD parking.
How far is North Cairns from the Esplanade Lagoon?
The Lagoon sits about 2 km south along the foreshore, roughly a 25 to 30 minute flat walk or a short drive. Muddy's Playground and the northern Esplanade parklands are much closer, around 15 minutes on foot.
Can I walk from Sheridan St to the Cairns CBD?
Yes. The walk from Tropic Towers to the CBD heart around Shields St is about 2 km on flat ground, which takes most people 20 to 25 minutes along the footpath. Buses run frequently along Sheridan St if you prefer not to walk.
Is North Cairns close to the airport?
Cairns Airport is roughly 5 km from North Cairns, about a 10 minute drive. A taxi or rideshare from the terminal costs around $20 to $25. Being on the airport side of town means you skip the CBD entirely on arrival and departure days.
North Cairns accommodation does not photograph as well as the Esplanade, and it will never make a tourism brochure cover. But it works, quietly and affordably, for the kind of trip most people are actually planning.
