The best free things to do in Cairns with kids sit on the north side of town: Muddy's Playground and its water play, the Botanic Gardens, the Red Arrow rainforest walk and the free council BBQs. Add a cheap swim at Tobruk Pool and the day costs a family almost nothing.
Here is how we run that day from our Sheridan Street apartments. The kitchen does most of the work: breakfast in, lunch packed, dinner cooked on the balcony.
Our two-bedroom apartments sleep five and come with a full kitchen and laundry. That is the real lever for Cairns with kids on a budget, because the meals are where a family holiday quietly bleeds money.
Is Muddy's Playground in Cairns really free?
Yes, completely. Muddy's Playground is run by Cairns Regional Council, opens daily from 9am to 7pm including public holidays, and charges nothing at the gate. It sits on the northern half of the Esplanade, just under 2 km from us.
From our door that is a flat 20 to 25 minute walk with a pram along the foreshore, or about three minutes in the car to the free car park beside it.
The water play is the drawcard. Fountains, sprays and shallow splash areas keep toddlers going for a solid hour, while the flying fox, rope bridge, slides and sound chimes give older kids something to climb. Bring a dry change of clothes.
Plan around the maintenance: sections close on Tuesday and Thursday mornings until noon, though council keeps at least half of it open. Muddy's Cafe, toilets and the free Egret BBQ all sit on site, so lunch costs the price of the sausages.
Is Cairns Botanic Gardens free, and does it work with kids?
Admission is free, and yes, as long as you aim it at the right corners. The Cairns Botanic Gardens sit on Collins Avenue in Edge Hill, about 2.3 km from us and four to five minutes by car.
Flecker Gardens and the conservatory open 7.30am to 5.30pm every day, and there is free on-street parking along Collins Avenue. Start inside the conservatory, where the humidity and the sheer size of the leaves get a reaction out of most children.
Then head for Centenary Lakes on the Greenslopes Street side. Boardwalks loop over the freshwater and saltwater lakes, a nature-play playground sits beside the water, and turtles and water dragons turn up most mornings.
If your kids are school age, the Friends of the Botanic Gardens run a free guided walk from Friends House at 10am Monday to Friday, usually 60 to 90 minutes. Pack repellent, because the shaded paths near the lakes are mosquito country.
Where is the closest rainforest walk for small legs?
The Red Arrow circuit. It starts near the Botanic Gardens end of Collins Avenue, climbs into Mt Whitfield Conservation Park, costs nothing, and it is the closest genuine patch of rainforest to our apartments.
Council's Mt Whitfield brochure puts the Red Arrow at 1.5 km and about an hour return, over short steep hills. There are a couple of hundred steps on each side, so it suits kids from roughly five upwards; toddlers ride in a carrier.
The payoff is a lookout above the Cairns Airport runway. Time the climb with a landing and the kids forget their legs entirely. The track is formed and signposted the whole way around.
Start before 9am while the canopy still holds the cool of the morning, take a water bottle each, and wear closed shoes. Roots and steps stay slippery for days after rain.
How much does a swim at Tobruk Memorial Pool cost?
Casual entry at Tobruk Memorial Pool is $8 for an adult and $6.60 for a child aged 4 to 15, with under 2s free alongside a paying adult. A family ticket covering two adults and two children is $24.
Tobruk sits at 370 Sheridan Street, roughly 800 metres up our own street and about a ten minute walk. That makes it the easy afternoon add-on when the kids still have something left in them.
Marlin Coast Swimming and Fitness runs the centre for council. There is a heated 50 metre pool, a shaded lap pool, a warm-water therapy pool and a toddler splash zone with shade over the top of it.
The cafe opens seven days. The FlowRider surf simulator costs extra, closes over winter and reopens from September with a 110 cm height minimum, and public holiday hours shift, so check the opening hours before a long weekend.
More free things to do in Cairns with kids when you want a change of scene
The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is the swim everyone has heard of: free, watched by lifeguards and stinger-free all year, open 6am to 9pm Thursday to Tuesday and from noon on Wednesdays after cleaning.
Be realistic about the distance from us. It is about 3.3 km by road, six minutes to the paid council car park, and a long walk with small children. There are free council BBQs and picnic lawns beside the water once you get there.
Rusty's Markets at 57-89 Grafton Street is the cheap-lunch layer, four minutes away by car. It trades Friday and Saturday 5am to 4pm and Sunday 5am to 3pm, with more than 180 stalls of tropical fruit, produce and prepared food.

Yes. Muddy's Playground is just under 2 km from our front door, a flat 20 to 25 minute walk that works with a pram: head east from Sheridan Street to the Esplanade, then turn south along the foreshore.
If small legs give out, it is roughly three minutes by car and the playground has a free car park.
Is the Esplanade Lagoon safe for kids to swim in?
Yes. The Cairns Esplanade Lagoon is a free public swimming lagoon with lifeguards on duty whenever it is open, and because it is a filtered pool rather than open sea, stingers are not a factor at any time of year.
It opens 6am to 9pm Thursday to Tuesday and from noon on Wednesdays. Children still need supervising.
When are the Queensland spring school holidays in 2026?
They run from Saturday 19 September to Monday 5 October 2026, with Term 4 starting on Tuesday 6 October. Muddy's Playground, the Botanic Gardens and Tobruk Memorial Pool all stay open through the break.
Muddy's is busiest mid-morning on holiday weekdays, so aim for early or late afternoon if you want room to move.
